your first role is critical

Something I've noticed after 3 years of doing this.

Your first role is critical to your success in tech sales and your career long term.

Why?

A lot of people have limiting beliefs and don't believe that they can get solid desirable roles with stable income and a potential for a six figure path.

This is a problem because what ends up happening is people go to apply to roles when they have no experience and no belief in themselves that they have value to give...

and they end up settling for roles that are either

  • not paying people as promised,
  • or they don't have a big enough team where they can actually learn from
  • or the product isn't built out enough for them to actually be able to sell it easily.

And these things can cause major levels of discouragement and cause people to actually quit tech sales thinking that it's too hard.

When the reality is - you can get a desirable role from the start.

It's really not about sales experience. It's just about how well can you master the interview process!

Because these companies aren't worried about if you can do the thing yet (they have training programs called RAMP, that they will put you through anyways...)

What they do care about - is how well can you showcase the traits they're looking for (coachability, ability to go above and beyond, intellectual curiosity, and things that I teach people in my one-on-one mentorship).

So the danger to avoid is really not holding yourself to a higher standard.

And this can be hard as an absolute beginner.

Sometimes it can be helpful to borrow the belief of others who have done the thing and have walked the road.

Take me, for example - I ended up getting into my first role and I stayed in there for over half a year where I didn't have anybody to learn from, no best practices to download, and I didn't close a single deal. (I was a full cycle rep with too much responsibility weighing over my head)

And that made me discouraged.

Luckily, I had a good mindset and mentor that pushed me to shoot for above and beyond what my beliefs had.

And a little while later, I ended up getting into one of the top companies in the space and starting to make $6-figures within just 7 months being there.

So I say this to help you be aware of what can happen when you let yourself fall to your limiting beliefs or self-doubt.

And just in my experience, mentorship is the only way that I've found to really help me raise the bar for myself. And it's what I do for my clients in the one-on-one mentorship.

Whether you seek mentorship from me, someone else, or at all, I just want to let you know here that I believe in you. And even if it's uncomfortable, stretch your beliefs a little bit. Even if you feel like it's hard, because you can get a better role than you're setting out to right now.

Here's a client i'm working with right now, (no tech sales experience) who booked a call with me last month, was worried about the job market being too shit and if he actually had what it takes, currently in 3 interview rounds with DESIREABLE companies:

Was just speaking to him before writing this - he's in a totally different paradigm than he was 20 days ago, and told me he has "the confidence now to go anywhere he wants and not have to settle for something lower"

That's all for today. I hope it inspired you.

I'm out for now,

Chad

P.S. By the way, I only have a couple slots left for my 1:1 mentorship that I've recently opened up until July 18th. I've been getting tons and tons of calls coming in, and so if you're wanting to take this seriously and not put this off to the end of the year, I'd highly recommend that you book a call with me to see if it makes sense before it's too late: https://calendly.com/chadmyersw/qualification-call-to-work-with-chad?month=2026-05

You are not who you think you are, and I'll prove it to you. Do you know who you are? When most people are asked that question, they say "oh well i'm Chad, or John, or Melissa" But in reality that's just a name that you were given at birth, it has nothing to do with who you actually are. The second thing you might say is, "well, I'm a human being" That is also just a label to describe our body, our organism, which isn't who you are either, you are not your body, if you cut off your arm you...

Once I finished school and entered the real world, I knew I wanted to do something different. But before I realized what that was, I tried out traditional jobs for a while. I had actually worked remotely in the past, but not the type I'm going to explain here. It was a job that required so much of my energy that it didn't feel like I had any freedom. After that, I tried an office job because during those times, I was in such pain and feeling lost that I didn't know what to do. I was so BORED....

Lesson #1: Without clear goals you will naturally waste time. With clear goals you will naturally be productive. Set clear goals with a timeframe attached for maximum productivity. Lesson #2: Self confidence comes from practice, self worth comes from believing you deserve good life. Don't get them confused. If you think you lack confidence, most likely, you just lack self worth. Fix this first and confidence will come easy. "We dont rise to our potential, we fall to our level of what we...
